Oops! Romney buys Twitter followers to look (un)popular

"Hold on, you mean I gained 4 followers
last month? Hmm..." (S)
Mitt Romney is feeling a bit left out I think. He recently purchased Twitter followers.

Yes, for those of you who are unfamiliar with Twitter, you can actually spend thousands of dollars to get thousands of Twitter followers over a short time-span.

On July 20th, the former Governor of Massachusetts had just over 673,000 followers, gaining, on average, 4,000 followers a day. But strangely, just 24 hours later on July 21st, Romney's Twits saw a massive hike in numbers.

Between midnight and 23:59, Romney accumulated 116,922 followers, out of the blue (click here to see the stats).

His campaign team claimed that it was due to his tweets about the Colorado shooting that he gained the followers, and denied that any purchasing took place. But it seems pretty obvious that they were planning to use this tragic event as a coverup, an excuse, all along. It was perfect, sickly timing.

Take a look at Mitt Romney's followers list and you will see the majority of the accounts that are at the top of the list have no profile pictures set, no tweets, and little to no followers. This means these accounts are new and they're clearly fake seeing as they have been blatantly mass-produced in order to make Romney look more popular.

And really? Could Romney seriously gain 116,992 followers in 24 hours just for a few tweets? It doesn't seem very likely. Even Lady Gaga doesn't gain that many monsters in that kind of timescale.

Obama has close to 18,000,000 followers on Twitter and as you can see, his chart is quite regular and there certainly haven't been any jumps of 100,000 followers a day on his account. It seems Obama could just be more likeable, more honest, but then does he really need any more followers? It's clear he has a substantially larger mass of people following him and he is the President of the US after all! So let's not jump on that bandwagon and start calling Obama a Saint, but at the same time, Romney is quite clearly a cheat.

It's not even as if his tweets were that heartfelt. Personally, the only way I could read them was with his cheesy voice and unsettling smile in my head, no matter how hard I tried.

The average Twitter user has 126 followers. If his numbers were to grow honestly, Romney would have needed 928 of his followers to retweet that message, and for all 126 of their followers to start following him. This seems highly unlikely to me. When you look at the details for this tweet, sure, it looks like just over 1,000 people retweeted it, but on closer inspection a lot of those were by the fake accounts that he bought, all of which, have fewer than 10 followers each.

Sounds a bit fishy to me!

Is Romney starting to feel like that unpopular kid at school? You know, the one with the geeky glasses, no friends, ridden with fleas and good at nothing? If he wants to gain followers honestly then he should show support for same-sex marriage and equal rights for the LGBT community, seeing as Obama clearly got such a boost when he did it! At least he didn't use a series of killings as a coverup.

Really? Using a shooting as a coverup for your Twitter cheats? True capitalist businessman style! That really makes me wonder if this man has a heart at all.
