Homo- and bisexuality 101

Today is going to be a short blog, as I have to go celebrate my father’s birthday today. I will tell a little story about what happened when I came out of the closet for the very first time. I came out to my friend who I will call “Prime” for privacy reasons. Prime seemed to have trouble understanding what homo- and bisexuality were. I had to explain the most basic part of homo- and bisexuality to him, because he simply didn’t understand. Enjoy the story!

“Dude, I think I’m bisexual.” “That’s great, congratulations! Believe me, it’s SO much better than being just gay!”. That is what Prime said to me when I told him I was bi “Why is that? How is being bi better than being gay? Enlighten me.” I asked him frowning. He replied: “Because if you are gay, you won’t even have chance at getting with a girl. If you are bi, you at least still have a chance”. I don’t think my friend had an idea of how stupid it sounded. “Listen, being bi is not better than being gay. Neither is it better than being straight.” I said. My friend then told me that “Being straight is the best because you like girls, and girls are hot. Being bi is not as good, because you also like guys which is a downside, but it still is better than being gay, because gay people only like guys which is gross.”. He told me he was sorry for gay guys, because they would never experience how sweet girls are, so it's not like he is homophobic, he felt truly sorry for them... He said he felt lucky being straight, as he would never have to experience a guy. “Prime,” I said “people who are gay don’t WANT to be with girls, I know YOU like girls, and I know YOU think guys are gross, but that doesn’t mean everyone does. Why would gays be gay, if they thought guys are gross? If I would find guys gross, I wouldn’t be bi. In the same way, gay people find girls "gross" and wouldn't want to be with them, that’s just how it works”. In the end, Prime said: ”Well, I guess you are right”.

I felt like I was talking to a little kid. Just the fact that I just had to explain something as simple as that to my friend, who usually is really smart. I am sure my friend didn’t mean any harm, he just didn’t understand how it worked. I think he just didn’t have the ability to fathom how other people worked yet, an ability that he does have today, in fact, he masters it, just like me. So what is the moral of the story? I guess that you shouldn’t assume everyone is like you. Have a good day everyone!
