Lady Gaga's hit, Born This Way, shot into the top 10 worldwide trends on Twitter earlier today with "Born This Way Is Our Anthem" occupying the top spots for many hours.
The well-known song - which was released back in February 2011 - calls for equality and acceptance of all minorities, the LGBT community being one of them. Lady Gaga has always been a strong supporter of LGBT rights, being bisexual herself. The lyrics in Born This Way start off with the words: "It doesn't matter if you love him,/ Or capital H-I-M./ Just put your paws up/ 'Cause you were born this way, baby". This message of self-acceptance is a very important part of this song.
Born This Way Is Our Anthem. It really confirmed for me who Gaga is, what she stands for + what she's willing to do

Taking a look at today's tweets about the song, many people said that this song has saved many lives. It is one of Lady Gaga's greatest songs for a reason - not only does it spread a message of love and acceptance, but it also actively makes a difference to people's lives. People who are feeling down and depressed, people who feel like nobody loves them, people who feel lesser than. A lot of these people are LGBT teens, and what better medium to convey such a strong message of love than music? This song has broken down the barrier of internalized homophobia for many teens in the past, and it continues to do so today.

"Don't hide yourself in regret/ Just love yourself and you're set/ I'm on the right track baby/ I was born this way", the song has helped many LGBT teenagers through the tough questioning period of their lives, Jamey Rodemeyer was one of them. He quoted these lyrics in one of his last YouTube videos before he committed suicide on Sunday 18th September 2011. It is fair to say that this tragic story would have happened so much sooner if it wasn't for Lady Gaga's dedicated work and positive messages.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Lady Gaga. I do like some of her music but not all of it and this allows be to be objective in this article. Born This Way debuted in the top five spots of every major market, including the Billboard 200. In the United States, it sold 1.108 million copies in its first week – the largest first week album sales in five years; an estimated 440,000 copies were sold on Amazon in two days of its first week at a price of 99 cents. Despite these facts, Born This Way isn't musically one of my favourites by Lady Gaga, but I think it has a brilliant video and the best lyrics of any song I know and it has worked wonders within, and beyond, the LGBT community.
